MAIRE, the leading engineering Group led by Alessandro Bernini and specializing in technology solutions for the energy transition with a focus on sustainable chemicals, fertilizers and hydrogen, has recently announced that Tecnimont (Integrated E&C Solutions business unit) has been awarded a rehabilitation study contract worth 50 million dollars for the upgrading of the Guaracara Refinery Complex in Point a Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago.
The project involves an in-depth technical and integrity evaluation of all units and equipment within the Guaracara complex, combined with the development of a rehabilitation study of the refinery, which has a capacity of around 150,000 barrels per day. The assessment will pinpoint which areas require upgrading or refurbishment and assess whether current technologies align with long-term operational and performance targets. The scope also includes an analysis of energy efficiency and environmental impact, as well as the design of advanced water intake and cooling systems in compliance with the highest international standards.
Following the analysis, MAIRE’s subsidiary Tecnimont Services will deliver preliminary CAPEX and OPEX estimates to support the refurbishment and restart of the refinery. The assessment of the complex’s unit and equipment, and the development of the rehabilitation study (Phase 1 and 2) are scheduled for completion by early 2027, after which the project is expected to extend to a FEED and subsequent EPC, ultimately covering full Operations & Maintenance for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the complex.
“This project further strengthens our geographic diversification expanding our presence in Central America and confirms the strategic relevance of upgrading initiatives – commented CEO Alessandro Bernini – By leveraging our engineering expertise and technological know-how, we support the transformation of existing assets into more efficient and environmentally advanced facilities. The upgrading of the Guaracara Refinery Complex is expected to generate tangible benefits for the local economy, contributing to value creation, industrial development and skill enhancement”.
Tecnimont secured the assignment due to its demonstrated experience in executing complex upgrading projects, further strengthened by Tecnimont Services’ capabilities in Operations & Maintenance and enhancing of existing facilities, as well as in the integration of green power, digital and energy service solutions for large complex projects.
